Petition Against Manta Ray and Shark fin soup
Author: Troy Palmer
Target(s): Consul General, Xu Jinzhong, Ministry of Environmental protection, PROC As China experiences a significant growth in demand for Shark fin soup that cannot be met without the threat of extinction for numerous indigenous species in their surrounding waters, Chinese restaurants and fishermen have opted to bolster this shortage with Manta Ray soup. Given the docile, curious nature of these social creatures - one of Our Ocean's most uniquely majestic - they provide easy targets who's numbers could easily be destroyed in the name of luxury. Make no mistake, Shark fin soup is not a life sustaining staple food- most of the animal is wasted in the making of this soup. Shark fin soup's popularity is partially based on a supposed increase in virility, not basic nutrition.
As usual, we have no real idea on how this will impact the Marine ecosystem if there were a sudden decrease in numbers of Manta Rays in Our Oceans. Worst of all, we risk losing yet another wild animal- intelligent and spiritually willing enough to gently interact with humans as pure representatives of this planet. We co-habitate and desperately need to find balance with these creatures before it is too late. As concerned citizens of Earth, we need to bring this to the attention of the Consul General, Xu Jinzhong, the Ministry of Environmental protection, and other top officials in the country of China so they may consider the ramifications of so endangering both Shark and Manta Ray populations- For the betterment of Our Oceans and ultimately our relations to the largest and most mysterious ecosystem on the planet. One day, we Will cause a chain reaction that cannot be reversed. How much longer can so many of Our brethren honestly believe their current actions won't come back to haunt us all? |
